Daughter of Llyr (a Welsh sea god, similar to Lir), she was forced by her brother into marriage with Matholwch, King of Ireland. Her half brother mutilated some horses and this led to Branwen being made to suffer by the King's followers. When her brother in Wales heard of this, he made war on Ireland. However he was killed, and Branwen died of sorrow.
Branwen has been compared with Rhiannon, as she was a giver of bracelets.
