| Ogham is an early Irish linear script, phonetic in character. It consists of 20 letters made up of strokes arranged in sets of 5. The historical examples that exist today are carved on the with reference to the stone's edge, which serves as the stemline. The characters are usually read from the base of the stone upwards.
Extra characters are found in some regions. Scholars' interpretation of these characters vary; however, it is generally agreed that they represent later attempts to reflect the complexity of language sounds not fully covered by the basic alphabet of 20 characters. Ogham is sometimes called the Tree Alphabet because in the Book of Ballymote, a 14th Century manuscript, each letter of the ogham alphabet is identified with the name of a particular tree.
Among the Ogham inscribed stones which have survived there are some which are pre-Christian but many of them date from the early crenturies of Irish Christianity and are commemorative in character - the name of the person commemorated is inscribed in the Ogham alphabet, using the Irish spelling of the time.
The link between the Ogham stone and the Celtic Cross, one of the most distinctive achievements of Irish Art may have had its beginning when, at the start of the early Christian era in Ireland, the prehistoric cult of the standing stone is likely to have come under the influence of the Christian religion.
Ogham is used to great effect for the inscription of names and initials on jewelry. To have your own customised content inscribed in ogham on this piece enter your request in the form below, please note there is a maximum of 9 letters on this particular piece.
